Well, today is the day for the annual Almaden Valley Art & Wine Festival at Almaden Lake Park. If you have never been, you really need to go. Local artists. Great food. Entertainment for adults and kids. Something for everybody. The festival is hosted each year by the Almaden Valley Women’s Club.
Play Flag Football league offers 5-on-5 non-contact flag football designed for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 15. Each team has eight to ten children.
The season consists of two practice weeks, one pre-season game, ten regular-season games, and an end of season playoff jamboree where teams play at least two additional games. All league play takes place on Sundays, and games last 45 minutes.
The price is $125 per player. Each player receives a team jersey, shorts, flags, mouthpiece, and league t-shirt. All players receive a participation trophy from the league at the end of the season.
Practice and games are held at Castillero Middle School in Almaden Valley. The Fall 2010 season begins October 10, 2010 and ends December 12, 2010. Register online by September 30, 2010. [EVENT IS CLOSED]
Support the 2010 Los Alamitos Silent Auction. All proceeds benefit Los Alamitos Elementary School‘s award winning music, art, and science programs. Approximately $154,000 is needed for classroom supplies, programs, and events.
Bid on a number of fantastic items, including sporting events, concert tickets, restaurant gift certificates, hotel stays, vacation rentals, rounds of golf, and home décor. Also bid on premium items such as a guitar autographed by the members of U2, and a record album autographed by Michael Jackson. You can also support Los Alamitos by making a donation or by volunteering for the auction.

My husband and I went to see the “The Birth of Impressionism – Masterpieces from the Musee d’Orsay” exhibit at the De Young Museum over Labor Day weekend. What a treat! The Musee d’Orsay in Paris is closed for renovations and they have sent their art collections travelling around the world. In addition to Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Sisley, Degas, there were several less famous artists. Whistler’s Mother was even there. My favorite was “Les Barques, régates à Argenteuil” by Claude Monet, 1874. (see photo to left)

Almaden Valley Youth Soccer League (AVYSL) has brought back Project 40 Program. The program is designed to give AVYSL players the opportunity to further develop their soccer skills and understanding of the game.
The program has been developed and will be run by the UK International Training Staff. Players are grouped by age, and receive age-appropriate training followed by a scrimmage.
Volunteer coaches and parents of participating players are encouraged to assist the UK trainers during the sessions. Volunteers will be instructed by the UK staff so they can help train the players and bring what they learn back to team practices.
Project 40 Program is held at Simonds Elementary School on Sundays, September 12, 2010 – October 17, 2010. U7 – U9 players (born between August 1, 2001 and July 31, 2004) play from 3:30pm – 4:45pm (5pm – 6:15pm on September 12, 2010 to work around the photograph schedule). Learn how to use Facebook to connect and share with the people in your life. You will learn how to create a Facebook account, setup your Facebook profile, and begin using Facebook’s networking features. The Leland High School Booster Club is holding its 2nd Annual Charger Invitational Golf Tournament.
The tournament format is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start. The event features golf, tee prizes, lunch, on-course games and refreshments, raffle, silent auction, and awards dinner.
Register as a single, twosome, or foursome. The fee is $150 per person. Proceeds support the Leland Athletics program.

TurningWheels for Kids is a local non-profit organization that provides new, sturdy, and safe bikes and helmets to local children who would otherwise not have their own.
A bike is a rite of passage for a child. Beyond the fun and smiles, a bike provides many benefits such as the lifelong habits of exercise and outdoor activity. TurningWheels for Kids has distributed over 8,000 bikes since 2003, and plans on hitting its annual goal again in 2010.
The TurningWheels fundraiser event is $40 per person, which includes some great wine, food, and desert from local chef Ivan Barnes.
The event is at UNWINED on Sunday, June 6 from 4-7pm. Walk-ins are welcome. The bar and shop will be open for regular business during this event.
