2011 Summer Art Camp at Lord of the Light Art Studio & Gallery in Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

Lord of the Light Art Studio & GalleryLord of the Light Art Studio & Gallery is holding its 2011 Summer Art Camp for kids in 1st – 7th grade. The studio has a unique camp curriculum that is designed to bring out and develop a child’s imagination and creativity, while teaching them the fundamentals of fine art.

The Summer Art Camp is a one-week, fun-filled learning experience that includes color theory, animation, and much more! Students will learn pencil drawing skills and how to use medias such as oil pastel, soft pastel, and watercolor. Your child will experience new freedom and a new love for art.

Session 1: Animal Drawing & Animation
Dates: June 20-24, 2011, 1:30-3:00pm

Session 2: Flower Drawing & Animation
Dates: July 18-22, 2011, 1:30-3:00pm

Session 3: Still Life Drawing & Animation
Dates: August 8-12, 2011, 1:30-3:00pm

Weekly Program

Lord of the Light Art Studio & Gallery also offers a Weekly Program that consists of a unique curriculum called Basic 1 through 14. The curriculum focuses on themes, media, color theory, and art history that helps students to visually understand and experience the techniques and basics of fine art.

This step-by-step curriculum is designed to improve the student’s artistic skills from 1st grade up through 12th grade, giving them the self confidence and the inspiration to further broaden their education in fine art.

Almaden Valley Women’s Club Offering College Scholarships to Graduating Seniors – UPDATED 2022

logo: Almaden Valley Women's ClubAlmaden Valley Women’s Club (AVWC) is once again offering college scholarships to graduating seniors who live in Almaden Valley.

These scholarships, funded through the Almaden Valley Art & Wine Festival, promote student service and academic achievement, and recognize high school students for outstanding leadership in service within our community.

AVWC has several scholarships to award to deserving students this year. Individual scholarships range from $500 – $2500.

Winners will be selected based on outstanding volunteer experience, academic performance, school activities, letters of recommendation, and personal essay.

Almaden Cares Meeting to Discuss Smart Driving for Teens – UPDATED 2022

image: almaden caresAlmaden Cares meetings are open to all who want to help save the lives of kids on the streets and roads in Almaden Valley.

At the meetings the group provides an update on the most recent accomplishments, discusses plans, and talks about how it can increase community involvement. The meetings are open to all adults and students.

Almaden Cares is a small group of community members who have joined together in response to the many tragic and horrific car collisions involving teenage drivers in Almaden Valley.

The goal of Almaden Cares is to raise the consciousness of pre-teens, teens, and parents regarding the causes of catastrophic accidents involving teen drivers.

The organization wants everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car and everyone who rides as a passenger to make good decisions about their own safety as well as the safety of those around them.

Almaden Cares invites you to join them in this community effort. The next meeting is at the Offices of Alain Pinel, 1071 Blossom Hill Road, San Jose, on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, from 7-8pm. Along with a special guest speaker, the group will discuss recent progress with community partners, its new website, and related issues. Spring 2011 Activity Guide for Almaden Community Center – UPDATED 2022

San Jose Parks Recreation & Neighborhood Services has released its City Wide Activity Guide for Spring 2011.

The Activity Guide includes all of the programs and classes planned for the Almaden Community Center in Spring 2011.

Almaden Valley residents have a variety of activities from which to choose. There’s something for everyone – from toddlers to seniors.

Choose from arts and crafts, camps, dance, early childhood recreation, education and enrichment, health and fitness, music, sports leagues and drop-ins, cooking, specialty programs, senior programs and events, and family events.

Registration for Spring 2011 activities begins on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 10am. You can register online.

Almaden Valley to Host 4th Annual / 2011 Battle of the Bands Competition Finale – UPDATED 2022

logo: Battle of the BandsThe Battle of the Bands concert finale is back! The top five finalists for the 4th Annual / 2011 Battle of the Bands will compete for prizes in a live concert here in Almaden Valley.

You are invited to attend this exciting live concert showcasing local talented bands and solo musicians from throughout San Jose.

Each of the five finalists will have up to 20 minutes to perform their set in front of an audience and judging panel of local music experts. The judging panel will determine the grand prize winner of the competition.

The Battle of the Bands concert is at Almaden Branch Library and Community Center on Saturday, March 19, 2011 from 3-6pm.

Operation Prom Dress 2011 in Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

Help prevent the tough economy from discouraging students to attend their Proms. The City of San Jose, in partnership with the Office of Councilmember Madison Nguyen, present Operation Prom Dress 2011.

Donate a new or gently used dress at the donation box inside Almaden Library through April 4, 2011. This is the third year in a row that Ms. Nguyen has led the effort to collect prom dresses for junior and senior girls to wear to their high school proms. In 2010 the drive collected more than 800 dresses.

In past years local dry cleaners, make up artists, and hair stylists have sponsored their services to some of the girls. If you would like to donate your services this year, whether for one girl or several, please contact Lan Thao Nguyen, Council Assistant to Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen, at 408-535-4959. Registration for the 10th Annual / 2011 Math Enrichment Summer Program at Leland High School begins on February 1, 2011.

Discounts for early registration and families will be available, so check the program website early.

U.S. Baseball Academy’s 2011 Baseball Camps in Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

logo: U.S. Baseball AcademyU.S. Baseball Academy is running camps in Almaden Valley for players in grades 1 through 12. Players have the choice to be instructed in hitting, pitching, and catching.

Leland High School’s Head Baseball Coach, Mike Sparrer, is the camp director. Instructors will include other coaches from around the San Jose area. The player-to-coach ratio is 6-to-1.

Leland Drama Department Presents Chicago (a.k.a., Play Ball) – UPDATED 2022

Leland Drama Department presents Chicago (a.k.a., Play Ball), a satirical comedy about crime in the 1920’s, with the Leland Jazz Band playing live.

Chicago offers social criticism of our judicial system, and a public fascinated by famous criminals. This one has got it all! (The play is Adapted and Directed by Elizabeth A. Taylor, Leland English and Drama Teacher.)

Chicago was written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a Journalist and Playwright who covered the female crime wave happening in the Windy City during the 1920’s.

The play is at Leland High School November 17-20, 2010, at 7pm each night, with an additional matinee show on November 20, 2010, at 1:00pm.

General admission tickets will be sold at the door and are $5 per person. The play is not suitable for children under 14 years of age. [EVENT IS CLOSED]
