East Bay Vivarium’s Traveling Reptile Program Coming to Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

photo: East Bay VivariumEast Bay Vivarium Traveling Reptile Program features between 20 and 30 reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids.

The program typically brings along an assortment of creepies, crawlies, and critters, including tarantulas, frogs, lizards, turtles, spiders, scorpions, and snakes. The program is very exciting and perfectly safe. Children will also learn a little natural history, animal husbandry, and safety.

San Jose’s Citywide 2011 Teen Talent Show Finale in Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

logo: Teen Talent ShowWatch teens ages 12-18 compete in the 2011 Teen Talent Show finale. Performances may include singing, dancing, comedy, magic, or other special talent.

All performers are the first and second place winners of the six local branch competitions. Each individual or group contestant will perform for up to 5 minutes.

Performances will be judged on a 10-point scale in the following four categories: (1) stage presence, (2) originality, (3) audience response, and (4) professionalism. Winners receive cash prizes of $250 for First Place, $150 for Second Place, and $50 for Third Place.

Children’s Discovery Museum’s Laboratory Stories in Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

logo: Children's Discovery Museum of San JoseChildren’s Discovery Museum will create a laboratory for young scientists to investigate chemical reactions with dry ice as they solve a dilemma presented within a folktale.

Laboratory Stories stimulates kids to explore the wonders of science. The program integrates language arts and science with interactive experiments that:

  • Develop experimental design and problem-solving skills
  • Promote essentials of observation
  • Spark student curiosity

This event will be held at the Almaden Branch Library inside the Program Room on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 from 3:30-5:00pm. [THIS EVENT IS CLOSED] The program is for children ages 5-12.

The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival is Performing The Tempest in Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

logo: The San Francisco Shakespeare FestivalThe San Francisco Shakespeare Festival is performing The Tempest in Almaden Valley. The performance will delight audiences of all ages as the cast brings to life the humor, romance, and adventure of this enchanted tale.

Throughout its history, The Tempest has been regarded as the pinnacle of Shakespeare’s dramatic output. Widely believed to be his final and most autobiographical play, it utilizes the wisdom and understanding gained from a career as a highly regarded dramatist.

Some of the Bard’s most delightful characters inhabit The Tempest’s magical island. Prospero, the sprite Ariel, the slave Caliban, and the clowns Stephano and Trinculo, all help bring to life the humor, romance, and adventure of this tale.

Shakespeare’s The Tempest will performed be at the Almaden Library on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 6:00 – 6:55pm. Post-show Q&A with the cast will be at 7:00pm. The performance is free. [THIS EVENT IS CLOSED]

Make a Mural for Display at the 23rd Annual San Jose Children’s Faire – UPDATED 2022

Participate in the Almaden Library mural making craft. Kids and parents will be decorating a mural with the theme, “Play Together, Learn Together: Growing with Giggles & Grins!”

The mural will be on display at the 23rd Annual San Jose Children’s Faire celebration at Discovery Meadow Park (located in front of the Children’s Discovery Museum). The Children’s Faire is Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 10:30am–3:00pm. (See photos from the 2010 faire.)

Displaying children’s art provides insight into the imagination and development of young children. These Children’s Art Displays are a means of helping the public understand the value of childhood creativity.

Operation Prom Dress 2011 in Almaden Valley – UPDATED 2022

Help prevent the tough economy from discouraging students to attend their Proms. The City of San Jose, in partnership with the Office of Councilmember Madison Nguyen, present Operation Prom Dress 2011.

Donate a new or gently used dress at the donation box inside Almaden Library through April 4, 2011. This is the third year in a row that Ms. Nguyen has led the effort to collect prom dresses for junior and senior girls to wear to their high school proms. In 2010 the drive collected more than 800 dresses.

In past years local dry cleaners, make up artists, and hair stylists have sponsored their services to some of the girls. If you would like to donate your services this year, whether for one girl or several, please contact Lan Thao Nguyen, Council Assistant to Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen, at 408-535-4959.
